Basics of Wood Framing
Wood framing includes the floors, walls, and roof.
The floor system is made of joists, or horizontal members that support the subfloor and bear on either foundations, walls, or beams.
The walls are the main load-bearing element of the frame. Walls are framed with vertical studs, usually spaced between 16” and 24” apart. These are held together with horizontal top and bottom plates. Window and door openings are reinforced with headers that transfer the load above to the surrounding studs.
Finally, the roof is built with rafters or trusses that allow the roof load to rest on the exterior walls.
After the skeleton of the structure is complete, wood framing includes something called structural sheathing, which is a layer of plywood or engineered panels called “oriented strand board” to provide lateral stability and help buildings stand up to high winds, heavy external loads, or seismic activity.

Chalk Line: These can be used to quickly mark straight, long lines across walls and floors with just a snap.
Circular Saw: This is the primary tool wood framers use to cut and prepare lumber. A circular saw can make fast, straight cuts across all types of lumber and sheathing.
Compound Miter Saw: A miter saw allows for extremely precise angles that can be repeated, which is necessary for elements like roof rafters
Reciprocating Saw: This type of saw, also known as a Sawzall, is excellent for rough cuts, demo, and cuts in difficult places.
Impact Drivers: This type of tool sinks structural screws quickly, helping to bring the frame together efficiently.
Drills: Particularly cordless drills, this tool is used to drill holes for plumbing and electrical runs.
Power Planer: This tool is used to smooth or slightly reduce the thickness of a board to maintain a flush, high-quality wall surface
Battery-powered or pneumatic nail guns: A framing nailer and a sheathing or clipping nailer are both high-quality options for joining and fastening lumber. A framing nail is used mainly for studs, plates, and joints, while a sheathing/clipping nailer will be used to attach the subfloor and sheathing.
Along with the nail guns themselves, a wood framing contractor will need either external batteries or use an air compressor and hose to supply power to these wood framing tools.
Framing Hammer: Though most of the wood framing process will rely on nail guns for quick installation, a quality hammer is still essential for areas that need extra attention to detail. Hammers can provide light demo, nudge lumber a few millimeters into place, and drive nails into difficult spots.
